Dorchester:

Dorchester is the County Town of Dorset and has been the site of a significant human settlement for at least two thousands years.  The town and surrounding countryside still show the marks made on it by our iron-age and Roman ancestors.

 

Maiden Castle, to the South West of Dorchester, is a huge iron-age hill fort and the site of a fierce battle with the Romans.

 

The Romans themselves settled in Dorchester (Durnovaria), where there have be substantial archaeological finds.  Even today, the main road from Dorchester to Weymouth follows an original route built by the Romans.

 

In more recent times, Dorchester has been a thriving market town.  It featured in many of the novels of Thomas Hardy, who was born at Bockhampton, just East of Dorchester.  Although livestock and corn sales no longer take place in Dorchester, the town still has a regular market.

 

Even from the town centre, you’re only minutes from beautiful countryside and riverside walks.
