Fleet:

The village of Fleet, to the West of Weymouth, was the setting for J. Meade Falkner’s famous smuggling novel “Moonfleet”.  

 

The village takes its name from the tidal lagoon running from Portland Harbour to Abbotsbury.  The lagoon is separated from Lyme Bay, by the Chesil beach - one of the world’s most impressive shingle banks and the product, as every school geography pupil knows, of long-shore drift working pebbles from Portland towards Bridport’s West Bay.  It’s said that local fisherman can tell where they are on the beach simply by the size of the stones, which diminish in size as they are moved by the waves along the shore.

 

Fleet village is a picturesque cluster of cottages, farms and woodland.  The South West Coast Path follows the shoreline of the Fleet and links to a network of other footpaths, some of which offer excellent views of the Fleet.

 

The village has two churches, the older of which was mostly destroyed by a freak wave - which, no doubt, explains the inland location of the “new” one!
