A Bit About Dorset:

LOCATIONS

Dorset is famous for the beauty of its scenery and the character of its towns and villages.  Each settlement is unique and the product of hundreds, even thousands, of years of humanity’s interaction with the world around it.

Dorset’s geography and geology have shaped the County’s landscape and the way people across the millennia have settled within it.  Rural Dorset’s picturesque villages and hamlets were built by those who farmed and worked its land or fished its rivers and coastal waters.  Others were built by the communities who exploited Dorset’s mineral wealth in stone, gravel and clay.

Market towns, like Dorchester, and sea ports, like Weymouth, developed around the trading of goods Dorset produced and consumed.

Other influences on the county’s towns and villages include the area’s military and naval history from the Roman Empire to the present day.  Dorset also has a strong and centuries-long history of tourism, including Royal patronage.
